thirty five

My thirty fifth year came in like a lion!  Highlights include:

  • dragging Nori to preschool because today was  Mass
  • coffee and uninterrupted conversation with Missy
  • yoga!
  • flowers and balloons from MY MOM!
  • my brother admitting that he does indeed love me on Facebook. I knew it.
  • splurging on awesome hour and a half massage
  • finding out massage was paid in full by wonderful friends Hos & McIntyres!?!?!
  • watching Nori's ballet class
  • pizza with World's Loudest and Most Impossible Toddler climbing on my back in the booth
  • busting in to my dad's house to find out he was actually mostly okay, just tired and slightly behind on meds, but not in a coma like I envisioned
  • tucking precious kids in to bed
  • sweet cards and messages
  • hot chocolate chip cookies
  • cuddle time with my main husband

I feel very loved and grateful! Thank you to everyone for the phone calls, emails, FB posts, and cards.

snow eating season

our crib in the frozen hood

I have showered and gotten dressed every day this weekend which is against my religion (I'm a Pajama-ist). After peeling off my jeans, I am thinking about how ironic it is that when I was in my teens and twenties, able to wear anything and look good, baggy was in style: oversized Champion sweatshirts, flannel shirts, carpenter pants, and bulky sweaters were cool. On Wednesday I will officially hit my mid-thirties and now that I am somehow both pear and apple shaped, skin tight denim and thin leggings abound.  You know it's bad when you contemplate wearing Spanx to workout.

Norelle started swimming lesson at the U of M through Learn to Swim. As there are only 3 kids in her class, she gets lots of individualized attention. She was nervous prior to class so I gave her a mantra which she kept repeating to herself, “I am safe and I can do this!  I am safe and I can to this!”. She loved her lesson and trusts the teacher to keep her safe. Tomorrow, she has her five year check up and I hear the shots are ex-ten-sive, a fact which I have not mentioned to her. It's gonna be ROUGH! Here is a conversation we had this week:

Nori: Momma, what does inedible mean?

Me: It means something you can’t eat

Nori: Oh. What does outedible mean?

Every night at bedtime while I am cuddling Henny, I quiz her asking her to say different words or point out different body parts. One sure way to get her to do something is to say don’t do it. So I said, "whatever you do, don’t raise you arms” and of course she raised her arms. Then I said, “whatever you do, don’t kick your feet” and she kicks her feet. I added, as a joke, “whatever you do, don’t toot!”... sure enough she tenses up her whole body and lets out a huge toot.  I laughed thereby reinforcing this behavior. Being the ham that she is, she now toots on command to entertain the crowd. I am turning her in to Henny Boo Boo.

My dad is out of the hospital after a five day "tune-up", as he calls it. Turns out he has a clot in his portal vein which is causing his liver to clog (medical term) and ammonia to build up in his body. All this and pancan, too!  He is home again doing very well! I am only driving him slightly bonkers checking in!

In a related note, I have been having major anxiety (or angcite as I once saw it spelled) this week. Instead of freaking out over the real things going on my life, I panic when I look at a huge pile of unmatched socks. Or I start worrying about  my in-laws remodeling their kitchen next year. Yes, I know this is weird, displaced anxiety and the least I do could is focus on poverty, famine, or global warming but no, it's socks. I am trying to cope by doing yoga and meditation (don't worry, I am not going to get a Namaste bumper sticker).  I went through a very similar episode when my mom was sick and also when my feet were really bad. Anxiety, it's my thing.

hands off, he's all mine

Happy Birthday to all the January birthdays out there: Papa Michael turned 81, Aunt Jaime turned 25,
Grandma Sylvia is 91, and Wendy is about 50-ish, and of course this old hag will hit  35 this week. I have my whole birthday planned: day off of work, coffee with Missy, yoga, 1.5 hour massage, nap, watch Nori at ballet, Punch pizza with my family, and snow cones for dessert. I even picked out my gifts because I am  an ungrateful B a take charge person. Jake planned a real date and even got a babysitter for Friday night. What a guy!

a much needed night with great friends!!

And finally, our basement...now with walls!

you rang?

all you need is sister

Busy weekend! My girls enjoyed the MOA and a fabulous party so I am officially happy. Nori loved the snow cone machine that we got her (what better gift to a girl with a pica?). Grandma & Grandpa even stayed an extra day to help out and give Jake and I a chance to sleep in and  an hour to do yoga/ play tennis after all of the festivities.

feeling great on Thursday!
he's baaack! Notice the Bozo side hair (him not me)

I have been spending a lot of time with my dear old dad. Our relationship is closer than ever. Despite his crappy diagnosis, he is really happy. He had chemo on Friday and came to the birthday party on Saturday.  Then, the trouble began. You know how it is, right? Dad goes missing  for 24 hours, you drive over to his house to find him incoherent and in pain, he refuses to get out of bed, you call the ambulance to take him to ER?  Yeah, no big deal. He is currently in the hospital  (where I do not work) feeling much better and cracking jokes. Docs are running labs and imaging to figure out WTH happened!

p.s. this girl dumped a two gallon bucket of water on the floor which then dripped through the cracks to the NEW DRYWALL in the basement. Tornado in a diaper.

five

My first baby turned FIVE today! Totally unbelievable. Nori is such a wonderful, creative, sensitive, loving, smart, and goofy  little girl...we love her so much!  All week long when I asked her where she thought we might go for her birthday, she answered, "a cafe?". We surprised her with a special family day out which included lunch at her favorite place, rides & treats at MOA, and gifts at home. After a few kiddie rides, I talked her in to going on the BIG roller coaster with me. She was nervous, taking huge breathes while we waited in line, but she did not chicken out. She let out half laughs/half cries the whole way on the ride and the second we stopped she smiled and said,  "I am never going on that ride again, I felt like I was going to fall out!".   As I tucked her in to bed tonight she did confess that that it was her favorite ride...that she is still never going on again.

take care of yourself

With regards to my Dad's illness, people are always telling me to take care of myself so I would just like to report that even though we are spending the entire day at the hospital for a celiac plexus block, I am having a spa day. I brought my own spinach salad and fresh fruit to eat, I did yoga in the non-denominational spirituality/healing/meditation chapel and now I am chillin in the Brookstone massage chair in the lobby of 7D while keeping up with work emails. Is that what you had in mind? Oh, and only two people have asked if I work here since I look so familiar. Probably would have been more, but I put lotion on my dry old lady hands and wore normal shoes today.

High Tea

bone china, of course
Nanny Theresa took the girls out for a proper tea at the Avalon Tea Room to celebrate Nori's upcoming birthday . I keep my old camera out so Nanny can take candids of the girls on outings. She is a wonderful nanny, we are lucky to have her!  Both girls a great time and enjoyed the lady talk.

no broken dishes...yet

Oh, for me? You shouldn't have!

Speaking of my old camera, soon-to-be Birthday Girl got ahold of it and captured some moments words can not express.
