Our open adoption...

Sometimes when I am up late at night feeding my babe I think of what we have to eat in the kitchen really relevant things to post about but I always forget by morning. Since people are always wondering I can give an update on Nori's birth family.

Tasha is doing very wonderfully...she had not a meltdown or anything of the sort although she knows "it" could still happen. She is back at one of her jobs and will start the other very soon so she will be very busy again. Her daughter has started speech therapy and has learned to say her "f's" so you can imagine what creative language she could come up with at any moment. They just sent us some professional portraits they had done at Sears and they look so cute! She is a wonderful woman and we love having her in our lives. Tasha and her daughter, sister, mother and niece will all be coming for Norelle's baptism at the end of March. Because of our unique situation and because it is their very first visit, we are keeping the baptism guest list very short, only inviting our immediate family to the service. We hope our parents can meet Tasha & her family and explore the richness of open adoption.

Paul, the birth father, seems okay but appears to be having more grief that anyone anticipated. He was not very proactive in the process and has not done any grief work through LSS, unlike Tasha. He himself was adopted at the age of 8 (long story) and did not have a good experience. Paul is definitely supportive of the adoption plan and of us, however he has some sadness about the way his life has turned out. We hope those feelings will lessen in time. Paul will be coming to visit in May while in town for the Rush concert.

Not so sensible of shoe

I have been being bad and walking around the house sans shoes. I can do this a little bit but lately I am jumping up to make bottles, quiet my crying baby or changing diapers barefoot which is a major no-no for me. Needless to say, my right foot is killing. For those who don't know, I am celebrating 5 years with a wicked combination of plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia and CRPS/RSD due to "high rigid arches" and an ill thought-out marathon attempt with a sadistic training coach. Ron Byland, you & your revealing running tights are on my bad side. Anyway, my miracle shoes, the MBT help tremendously but curiously ONLY if they are actually on my feet. So, I am canceling my workouts and planting my butt firmly on couch until this flare-up passes.

In other family health news, my Grandma Audrey has learned that her pancreatic cancer has metastasized throughout her body into her lungs and liver and she is choosing to stop her chemo, at least for now. We are all very sad but respect her decision. We do not know what this means but it is likely not very promising. Please pray for her. And my cousin Abby continues to have serious abdominal pain even after the removal of her gallbladder so she will be going into the U of M hospital fora full-workup to get her back on her feet like she should be.

Nori rolls

The noun not the the verb. Hot date: wasabi.

Last night Jake & I had our first alone date since coming home with our daughter. We went to Fuji-ya in downtown Saint Paul and had some delicious sushi, minus any nori rolls. It was fun to get away alone but of course we talked about her much of the time as well as planning for our unexpected vacation. Afterwards we stopped by a Starbucks coffeeshop for some hot chocolate and Jake grilled the employees about the big meeting that was in the news. Apparently they talked a lot about their espresso drink. Zzzz

Hol & Case were home with baby Nori. Casey comes over every Wednesday after work and Hol is here all this week, thankfully because baby likes to wake up at 5:00 a.m. and that is the Grandma Shift in my book. I have no idea how my mom managed as a single mom, no wonder we ate Taco Johns for every meal.

The subject of sleep

My newborn is a good sleeper and I am not sleep deprived yet. I go to bed early, take a nap and do just fine, most days. Jake however is chronically sleep deprived even before the baby. He wakes up at 5:30 a.m. and usually doesn't get to bed before 12:00 a.m. He has too much to do at night...tennis, dinner, hanging out with us and tons of reading for work. Now he hears me when I get up with the baby so that's even less sleep. I think I need to start a campaign to get him to sleep...any ideas on how to do that? I am reading this book recommend by my ped call Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. Do you think they make one for tired husbands?

Telephone

Someone, who shall remain nameless (Melissa Rochelle Nelson Ho), commented in my last post that the telephone is a preferable way to communicate vs. Facebook. I do agree. But since it is not realistic to call all your friends & family, I must advocate that these social utiltity sites are a great way to stay in touch without all the effort. Anyway, this reminded of the year 1990 when all I did was talk on the phone. For my 13th birthday my gift was a phone jack in my room and call waiting. Ahhh. No more busy signals or (gasp!) missed calls from other 13-year-olds thanks to call waiting. I recall vividly the moment I got my first beep. I was unaware that the call waiting was hooked up but I recognized the telltale beep and it was wonderful. It also happens that it was the same day I first heard the power ballad More Than Words by Extreme...remember that song? "More than woooords, is all you have to do to make it reeeealll..."

What's it called, social utility?

So why are so many people my age and older afraid of having myspace or facebook accounts? I guess I understand why teachers need to be extra cautious but c'mom friends. My own 54-year-old mother wants to make one, although she calls them "blogs" ("Listen" I told her "you have to figure it out yourself or I will be stuck updating it just like how I have to download all your digital pictures now").

Are you shy? Embarrassed to put yourself out there? Or just too professional? If you are reading this right now you must realize that it at least somewhat amusing to read what other people are up to, hence my 3 blog readers (love to Sabrina, Ellen Dodds and Aunt Jill!). Why not challenge yourself to make an account, spread the love and be my friend in the virtual world? Express yourself, share some photos or at least look into it, would you? Don't get old on me!

Whirlwind weekend

Wow, the weekends go by fast! I hate seeing Jake get ready for another week of work although I'm glad it's not me, yet. Auntie Ellen was in town Friday night so we enjoyed some pizza & TV with her. Saturday was Angie's baby shower so Missy & I prepared some yummy fruit kabobs & margarita dip we found on AllRecipes.com. Saturday night Andy cooked the best Asian ribs I have ever eaten. It's official, my favorite meal is ribs. Today we went to church, worked out, napped, visited with family & neighbors and now we are settling in to watch some Red Carpet Oscar coverage together. Not glamorous but a quality weekend with my peeps.

  • 1/2 cup dairy sour cream
  • 1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, cut up and softened
  • 1/4 cup sifted powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon tequila
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • pound cake cubes
  • assorted fresh fruit (strawberries, cubed melon, pina, kiwi and seedless red)
  1. For margarita dip, place sour cream, cream cheese, powdered sugar, tequila, orange juice concentrate, and lime juice in a blender container or food processor bowl. Cover; blend or process until combined. Add whipping cream. Cover; blend or process until fluffy and mixture mounds. Serve immediately or cover and chill up to 24 hours.
  2. Arrange small skewers of cake and fruit on a serving platter. Serve with dip.

Kermit says hi

Kermie hates naps so we took pictures instead.

Aloha baby

Reason #222 I have the best husband in the world...he earned an all expense paid trip to Maui for us! Because he was a top analyst (anal-yst) at work this year, we get to travel to Hawaii for a week of fun activities, yummy meals and warm sun! Not to brag, but OMG this rocks.

We leave at the end of April and Norelle is going to stay home but we know she will have a blast in Winona rocking out with G-pa Steve & G-ma Liz, Auntie Elle, Funcle Char and Gramsie Holly. The thought of leaving her gives me a panic attack only because I will miss her SOOO much. I know the grandparents will cherish their alone time with her. It must be my lucky year?!

Meet the (great grand) Parents

New pot

Thanks to my extreme clumsiness (just like Fergie, really) I broke my old, uber crappy coffee pot and now we have newer, nicer one. Yay for me. This baby is programmable, has temp control, a water filter and many other "perks". It's wonderful... just call me Mrs. Coffee.

My baby!

Norelle's infant photos...

Look whose Dadddy sent her flowers!

Not only did Jake leave us very thoughtful Valentine cards this morning, later he sent us flowers!! One pink rose and a teddy bear for Norelle and a dozen pink & red roses for me. We are so lucky to have him! Also, notice Nori's too big yet still cute LOVE onesie and jeans with hearts on them...

Lee Press-On Teeth

One last update. I spent FIVE hours in the dentist's chair on Sunday, day of rest, as the dentist drilled out my old root canal, bleached the inside of my bad tooth, took impressions, drilled, sanded, etc. to prepare my teeth for the new veneers which will be ready in 6 weeks. In the meantime, I have temporaries which actually look better and whiter that my old teeth. But really it is just one tooth. Yep, you heard that right. There is a fake crack which make it look like two separate front teeth but it's just one giant front tooth and feels like a Lee Press-On Tooth as if it could pop off at any moment. If that happens, I will be canceling all my public appearances...

Around here...

All is well on the home front! I am a bad blogger but I just hate to take precious time away from my baby/husband/sleep/cleaning/eating to sit on the dumb computer. But here I sit.

Nori is a super baby and we love her endlessly! What did we do before we had her? I am already mourning the passing of my maternity leave ( I have ONLY 6.5 weeks left) and I can not bear the thought of not being with her and having her, gasp!, in someone else's care. Not to mention no naps during the day for me. We have had many visitors but we realized after the all the baby shower festivities and that we need to carve out some family time for just us to get used to each other and hang out as the dysFUNctional family we are meant to be. We are hoping this weekend we can do just that!

Several people close to me have been having major medical issues so my thoughts & prayers are on them as they work through those. It's hard not being able to help! As one Bill Palbicki likes to say, "you have everything when you have your health". He also likes to say "Go pound sand" and "I got it at Costco". I doubt he reads this far into my posts so I stand behind these comments. I was just telling Missy today how he also loves to shoot the duck but that warrants a full post of it's own so I'll save it for another day...

Nicknames for Norelle

We call her many things, here's the latest:
  1. Mommy's Little PooPer
  2. Norbo
  3. Birdie
  4. Wren (my Papa calls her this)
  5. Ferosha Coutoura
  6. Snorelle

I'm writing a book...

I've been a parent for awhile now and I think I have some real gems of wisdom to share based on my own experiences. My working title is 25 Days (or however many when it goes to print) As A Mom, I Must Be Doing Okay! Here are some ideas I have for chapter titles:

Chapter One: How to Adopt a Baby in 7 Months

Chapter Two: Sleep When Your Baby Sleeps
Why has no one thought of this yet?

Chapter Three: Eat When Your Baby Eats
Your baby enjoys a full meal 10 times day, you should too! Have a turkey pot pie or ham sammy whenever you feed your baby

Chapter Four: Eat What Your Baby Eats
For those moms on a diet, formula is nutritious and only has 20 calories an ounce
.

That’s all I have so far.

Get Well Abby!

My 15-year-old cousin/Goddaughter Abby is at Children's Hospital tonight. She has been having tummy problems for weeks now. I think she is just sad about not being youngest kid in the family anymore. Actually, she saw Juno and is now pregnant with Paulie Bleeker's baby. Just kidding, she has a big geometry test to get out of. They have thought it was everything from an ulcer to gallstones but no one know what is going on and the pain meds are not helping. Hopefully, they can figure out what ails her and fix it ASAP!

Congrats Jake!

He won the Lifetime Corporate Challenge tennis tourney. Good thing since he was gone all weekend...he better come home with a trophy! Soon we will all be on the pro tour. Who's more dominant: Federer or Seltz?

Baby shower madness!

Yesterday we had a WONDERFUL baby shower with all my close friends! Melissa (along some salad help from Sarah & Gina) outdid herself with awesome food and beautiful flowers. Nori had so much fun meeting everyone and I was so honored that everyone was so happy for us! Norelle received many great, thoughtful gifts including cute pink outfits, books, a swing, a pack-n-play, blankets and money for her stroller...yay! We are so thankful for all caring people in our lives. Thank you all!!

Dr. Krentist, my dentist

So I spent 3 hours at the dentist this morning, just for a cleaning and some prep work. Apparently I am very lucky because my dentist teaches an aesthetic dentistry course at the U of M (think cosmetic or "art" as he calls it) and he suddenly had an opening for me to come in this Sunday and get my two front teeth (which were tragically chipped in a bike/mailbox accident in '86) redone with porcelain veneers for a very bargain basement fee...as long as he can teach others while working on me. Ever since said bike/mailbox accident at age of 8, my front teeth have never quite matched each other or been all that great. But now, they should finally look natural. Except since I am writing this everyone will know that they are NOT natural but I don't think that is news. I hope I don't get chicklet teeth. At rate, the hygienists kept saying how cool this because it's really hard to get in as a guinea pig but lo and behold... right place, right time.

p.s. my daughter does not like it when I blog.

Wells Fargo Baby Shower today!

Those bankers really know how to throw a shower! We had a lovely pizza party with all the suits and Norelle was showered with tons super cute pink outfits and even a stylish spring coat, Baby Einstein play mat, a new Boppy, bath stuff, and on and on. Very fun!

February 03, 2008

change of blog name?

SoS may soon become Too Big For My Britches (TBFMB) due to my increased caloric intake as of late. All the wonderful meals keep pouring in! Selena made arroz con pollo last week, Stace & Eric bought over lasagna with garlic bread on Friday and today we had two meals at the Hos. First, a 30th Birthday Brunch where Jake & I devoured our own loaf (or so we thought of it) of Monkey Bread and back again we came tonight for a Super Bowl chili meal. Anders made brownies with giant Hershey bars right in the middle and he even cut us middle pieces. I'm fat.

Lauren really loves "baby No-wee" so we had fun watching her hold her, kiss her and just be sweet. Little does she know that Norelle is wearing/using all her baby stuff from just few years back. I'm sure the claws would be out if she knew who was wearing her hot pink Baby GAP velour jumpsuit.

FYI, Norelle still rocks. I have taken to loading her in (Lauren's old) Baby Bjorn and stuffing her under my purple/green Columbia coat circa 1996 (apparently I thought I was size Large back then) and taking Dorothy for a walk. It's really great to get outside with my girls and Nori falls right asleep despite me constantly poking her to make sure she is getting enough air in my wind-proof coat. She also went to Babies R Us, grocery shopping and to church this weekend. The pastors at church went bonkers over her and Pastor Susan even teared up and said "God is wonderful! He works in amazing ways although sometimes much slower than we would like, huh?" Amen sister!

Finally, keep Liz & Ellen in your prayers as they just took off for Tanzania today for a church mission trip! They are out educating the less fortunate about celebrity gossip and sharing old tabloids with them... true heroes in my book.

Tasha sent us this...

The Story of Norelle’s Family

Once there were two expectant families

One carried and cared for you beneath her beating heart

She became your birthmother

The other carried the hope of you within them

They became your family

As the days passed and you grew bigger and stronger

Your birthmother knew that she could not give you all that needed after your birth

Meanwhile, your family was ready and waiting for you

One day your birthmother and the Seltzes found each other

They looked into each other’s eyes and saw a friend

Your birthmother saw the life your new family could give you

The Seltzes saw how much your birthmother cared for you

They decided what you needed was both kinds of love in your life

So now you have two families

One by birth, the other by adoption

Two different kinds of families

Two different kinds of love

Both a part of you

Final Tally

Sometimes I think that when I die and go to heaven, God is going to run a report on me and tally up all the things I have done in my life. He might tell me how many hours I have slept, how many cookies I have eaten, number of dollars I spent on coffee, etc. He might have some really cool pie charts or bar graphs to illustrate particular areas of stength and weakness. After we review the data, I assume we would have a one-on-one about the whole life experience and discuss what is next, like what kind of job I am going to have in heaven or where I am going to be living for all of eternity.
